Material Options
Before we fabricate, form, laser cut, or create any sheet metal part, we always start with the same question: What material is this part made of? There is a wide variety of sheet metal you can select for your fabrication project, and GSM carries a broad selection. Our materials list below shows our standard sheet metal material selection. If you do not see your desired material, ordering specific material for our customers is something we do regularly.
Aluminum
All your aluminum sheet metal needs can be satisfied through GSM! We work with both 5052 and 6061 aluminum alloys in a multitude of different thicknesses. 5052 offers excellent corrosion resistance and formability, while 6061 provides superior strength for structural applications.
| Aluminum | ||
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | Min | Max |
| Thickness | 0.032″ | 0.125″ |
| Grade | 5052 | 6061-T6 |
| ASTM | ASTM B209 | |
Cold Rolled Steel
If you are looking for a sturdy, shiny, and smooth metal for your part, look no further than cold rolled steel. It is strong, good looking, and will not shrink during the forming process, making for high precision parts with tight tolerances.
| Cold Rolled Steel | ||
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | Min | Max |
| Thickness | 0.036″ | 0.125″ |
| Grade | CQ | DDS |
| ASTM | ASTM A1008 | |
Stainless Steel
Easy to fabricate, corrosion resistant, and offering a long life span, Stainless Steel is a great option for your fabricated parts. GSM can supply all the stainless steel solutions you need across a range of grades for different corrosion and strength requirements.
| Stainless Steel | ||
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | Min | Max |
| Thickness | 0.038″ | 0.109″ |
| Grade | 304 | 316 |
| ASTM | ASTM A240 | |
Hot Rolled Steel
Hot Rolled Steel offers better workability, little to no internal stress, and a lower cost than cold rolled steel. Compared to cold rolled steel, it has more rough edges and surfaces that may require deburring. It is ideal for structural parts where surface finish is less critical.
| Hot Rolled Steel | ||
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | Min | Max |
| Thickness | 0.134″ | 0.250″ |
| Grade | CQ | HSLA |
| ASTM | ASTM A1011 | |
Galvanized Steel
What makes this steel special is the protective coat of zinc that improves the corrosion resistance of the material. This makes it more resistant to damage and protects the steel beneath from harsh atmospheric conditions. Galvanized steel is ideal for outdoor and corrosion-prone environments.
| Galvanized Steel | ||
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | Min | Max |
| Thickness | 0.060″ | 0.135″ |
| Grade | G60 | G90 |
| ASTM | ASTM A653 | |
Galvanneal Steel
Also known as Galvannealed Steel, this comes from galvanizing then annealing the sheet of steel. It has a matte grey color which is easily paintable with a more uniform coating. Galvanneal is the preferred choice when parts will be painted after fabrication.
| Galvanneal Steel | ||
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | Min | Max |
| Thickness | 0.061″ | 0.093″ |
| Grade | A40 | A60 |
| ASTM | ASTM A653 | |
